Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Use Less AI processes information while helping you build a more intentional relationship with AI tools.

Effective date: June 10, 2026

1. Who We Are

Use Less AI is a macOS app that helps people pause before using AI tools. The app detects selected AI apps, websites, and command-line tools, then asks for a short intention before access is granted or blocked.

Controller: [Your legal name or company name]. Contact: [privacy@yourdomain.com]. Address: [Your business address, if required].

2. Information We Process

We process information you provide during onboarding, such as your optional contact email, your selected boundaries, and your privacy or analytics preference.

When an access check appears, we may process the text you type into the intention field, the AI tool being accessed, your configured boundaries, the access result, a category, feedback shown to you, timestamps, app version, and a randomly generated install identifier.

We may process technical information needed for security, reliability, rate limiting, and beta analytics, such as event names, approximate timestamps, app version, permission status, request metadata, and basic network metadata processed by our infrastructure providers.

3. Information That Stays On Your Device

Use Less AI uses local macOS permissions such as Accessibility and Automation to detect relevant apps and browser state. The app does not record your screen, read unrelated app content, or upload general browsing history.

Your local app settings, onboarding completion state, boundaries, and permission status may be stored on your Mac so the app can work correctly.

4. Why We Process Information

We process data to provide the core app functionality: detecting selected AI tools, showing the intention check, evaluating whether access should be granted, and enforcing your configured boundaries.

We also process limited beta analytics to understand whether onboarding works, whether access checks are reliable, how often access is granted or declined, and where the product needs improvement.

If you provide your email, we may use it to contact you about beta feedback, surveys, interviews, or important product updates.

5. Legal Bases

Where GDPR applies, we rely on performance of a contract or pre-contractual steps to provide the core app functionality you request.

We rely on legitimate interests for security, abuse prevention, reliability, rate limiting, and basic product improvement, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights and freedoms.

We rely on consent where you choose to share optional contact details or enable optional analytics. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app settings.

6. Service Providers

We use Cloudflare to operate our API proxy, protect the service, and apply rate limits.

We use PostHog EU Cloud for product analytics during the beta.

We may use an AI inference provider through our server-side API proxy to evaluate access-check intentions. We do not place provider API keys inside the app.

7. International Transfers

Some service providers may process data outside your country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses, data processing agreements, and provider security commitments.

8. Retention

We keep personal data only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy.

Beta analytics and access-check logs are retained for product learning, debugging, abuse prevention, and reliability analysis, then deleted or anonymized when no longer needed.

Optional contact email is retained until you ask us to delete it or until it is no longer needed for beta research and communication.

9. Your Choices

You can disable analytics in the app settings at any time.

You can choose not to provide an email address.

You can stop using the app, remove local permissions in macOS System Settings, or uninstall the app at any time.

10. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or export your personal data, and to object to certain processing.

Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing that happened before withdrawal.

If you are in the European Economic Area, you may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

11. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal data. No system is perfectly secure, but we design the app to keep unnecessary data off our servers and to avoid collecting unrelated activity.

12. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy as the beta and product evolve. If changes are material, we will provide appropriate notice in the app or on our website.

13. Contact
